Teme Paul Hernandez, PH.D. of Baton Rouge, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, at the age of 94. He was born in Duson, La., on May 15, 1919, to the late Saul Hernandez and Bertha Lagnau.

Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until religious services at 10:00 a.m. conducted by Rev. Mike Shatzle. Burial to follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Hernandez, Randy Hernandez, Wayne Guilbeau.

He is survived by his son, T. Paul Hernandez Jr daughters and sonsinlaw, Patricia H. and John Iry Quebedeaux, and Sandra H. and Michael Leo Evans grandchildren and their spouses, John I. and Dianne Ammons Quebedeaux, Elizabeth Q. and Aaron Duncan, Janie Q. and Eric Wells, Timothy and Jessica LaBorde Quebedeaux, Patrick and Ashley Johnson Quebedeaux, Michael T. and Jodie Goodwin Evans, Andrew W. and Angie Louque Evans nine great grandchildren, Alex and Kevin Quebedeaux, Allison Seward, Sadie and Lauren Duncan, Ethan and Ryder Wells, and Claire and Noah Quebedeaux sister Lily Peterson, Lafayette, La. and brother Turney J. Hernandez, Newark, De.

He was preceded in death by his parents his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary Lauris Tate Hernandez, granddaughter, Katherine Q. Seward brothers, Thomas, Theo, Alcide Taft, Toby, Travis and sister, Murley Hernandez LeBlanc.

He entered the Army in August of 1943, and was honorably discharged in February of 1946, after working with the Counter Intelligence Corps.

Dr. Teme P. Hernandez became the first director of the Sweet Potato Research Center in 1949, Chase, La. In 1957 until his retirement in 1983 he worked at LSU, Dept. of Horticulture, in research and teaching. He supervised over 30 graduate students research for M.S. and Ph.D degrees. He developed or codeveloped 8 sweet potato cultivars including Acadian, Jasper, Centennial, Travis tomato cultivars including Creoleand the cabbage variety, Improved Allyear.

He authored or coauthored 156 publications during his tenure at LSU. In 1983 he retired Professor Emeritus, LSU and continued his work in research and training through IADS International Agricultural Development Service. He helped research and planning on breeding and seed production in Indonesia. Throughout his career he chaired and helped organize the International Sweet Potato Collaborators Group and the International Root Crop Group.

He chaired numerous organizations including American Society for Horticultural Science, Sweet Potato Collaborators Group. He was contributing editor to World Book Encyclopedia. President of Louisiana Society for Horticultural Science. His honors include King, Louisiana Yambilee 1971, 1984, Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to Louisiana Sweet Potato Industry 1972, L. M. Ware Distinguished Teaching Award 1971.
