Dr. Elkins

September 24, 1948 — July 22, 2018

Dr. Clarence Alan Elkins, 69, of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family, on July 22, 2018. Alan was a corporal in the U.S. Marines Corps, serving one tour duty in Vietnam from 1967-1969, and will be interred with military honors. Alan had a lifelong love of learning. He graduated from Broadmoor High School in 1966, earned a Bachelors and Master's Degree from Louisiana State University, and then attended the University of Nebraska where he earned his PhD in Parasitology in 1980. He returned to Louisiana and went to work for the State of Louisiana. After retiring from his position as Assistant Commissioner of Elections, Dr. Elkins returned to his love of education as a Professor at the Baton Rouge Community College from where he retired. Alan survived by his wife of 48 years, Diane Burch Elkins; his sons Nathan Alan Elkins and his wife Jessica, Blake Elgin Elkins and his wife Camille; and his daughter Krystin Burch Elkins. He is also survived by his mother Amelia Elkins; his brother Barry and his wife Angela Elkins; his sister Connie and her husband Ayers Bradford; and his brother Charles (Chuck) and his wife Kate Elkins; along with his beautiful and precious grandchildren Eleanor, Amelia, Benjamin and Alice, who will always and forever remember "Granddaddy." He remains adored by many nieces and nephews across the globe who cannot imagine a holiday without his signature chocolate pies and fried turkey. He is preceded in death by his father Charles Riley Elkins, his grandparents Dewey and Nell Lindsey, and Clarence and Alice Elkins. The family of Alan wish to extend our sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses at Ochsner's Medical Center, and to the Nurses and caregivers at Clarity Hospice for the care they provided. Church Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2018, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook or leave a personal note to the family at www.resthavenbatonrouge.com. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (michaeljfox.org).
