Dr. Donald Joseph Perrere, DDS., age 81, passed away on September 29, 2015.
Dr. Perrere was the 1952 Valedictorian of Ascension Catholic High School in Donaldsonville. He went on to the Loyola University of the South School of Pharmacy and was first in his class at the College of Dentistry of Loyola University in 1958.
He received many awards such as the K&B Pharmacy Scholarship, and was a member in many societies such as O.K.U. Dental Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society, C. Victor Vignes Odonatological Society, and a fellowship in the International College of Dentistry.
Dr. Perrere served as a Lt. with the US Navy Dental Corps from 1958 to 1962 and was stationed at the US Naval Air Station in Algiers, LA, the US Marine Recruit Depot in San Diego, California and the US Navy Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
He enjoyed 36 years in the practice of Dentistry as a professional member of East Baton Rouge Dental Association, Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association (President in 1990), Louisiana Dental Association, American Dental Association, and the Council on Dental Health and Dental Care. He served his community as Cub-Master of Cub-Scout Troop 136 Baton Rouge, Baseball Coach in American Legion Baseball Class C, and served on the original Anti-Drug Coalition team formed during the Pat Screen Mayoral term. He was appointed as Loyola University representative on board of Independent Colleges and Universities, and nominated by Loyola president, Bernard P. Knoth for the Ethics Board of the State of Louisiana to Gov. Mike Foster. He served as a board member of the Grand Isle Community on Aging, as President of Grand Isle Planning and Zoning, and was a founding member of Entergy Team City.
Most of all, he was an avid sportsman, enjoyed the simple life, loved Louisiana outdoors and LSU, and never backed down from a challenge or responsibility. He was of Spanish decent, but loved being a Coon-Ass, and never played the guitar well.
Dr. Donald Perrere is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda Lofton Perrere of Kentwoood, LA; daughter, Lynette Perrere Anders of Baton Rouge, LA; and grandchildren, Brandon Anders, Jordan Anders, and Victoria Anders of Baton Rouge, LA.
He is preceded in death by his son, Mark Claiborne Perrere; grandparents, C.J. Ascosta, Sr. and Agnes Lauland Acosta, and Joseph Perrere and Matilde Rivere Perrere; and parents, Agneil Joseph Perrere and Minta Acosta Perrere of Napoleonville and Donaldsonville, LA.
The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
