Dorothy Buchanan

January 24, 1931 — March 10, 2021

Dorothy Buchanan, born on January 24, 1931, passed away on March 10, 2021, at the age of 90. Dorothy gave her life to Jesus at the age of 7 while sitting in her daddy’s lap while her mother prayed that she understood what it meant to be saved. She was baptized by her daddy, the minister of the church she joined, after giving the testimony of her salvation before the church a week before. Her testimony resulted in the salvation of two grown men who worked in the oil fields around Seminole, Texas. They remarked that if God could save a little girl like Dorothy, that surely He could save them, if only they believed that Jesus died for their sins too. That influence guided Dorothy’s life and caused her even more to want to tell the story of Jesus and his wonderful salvations; something she did throughout her life.

Later in life, Dorothy taught in Baton Rouge area schools for 40 years. She attended Parkview Baptist Church where she taught and played piano for all events.

Dorothy is survived by her son, John Stanley Smith and wife, Gena; her daughter, Beverly Haddox; her grandchildren, John Dylan Smith, David Joel Haddox, Julia Anne Homan, and Paul Christopher McAndrew; her great grandchildren, Robert Avery Homan, Aliya Jayden Homan, Logan Kyle Haddox, Ximena McAndrew, Ana Paula McAndrew, and Daniela McAndrew; and her son-in-law, Arthur Bays.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Everett Smith; and her daughter, Rosemary Janette Bays.
