Donald Hammons

Donald Wayne Hammons, age 86, resident of Baton Rouge, La, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday May 2, 2018 at 10:00pm. He was born in Downsville, Louisiana to Harvey and Effie Hammons. He served in the Army during the Korean war from 1953 to 1955. Don married Bonnie Jean Ozley of Arcadia on January 27, 1956. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. Don also received his Masters and Doctorate in Education degrees from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He and Bonnie have been resident's of Baton Rouge for 58 years. He taught at University Laboratory school from 1965 -1978. He was Head of Independent Study at LSU from 1978 until he retired in 1995. Don loved fishing, reading, crusing with Bonnie, and watching his LSU Tigers play football and baseball. Previously he was active in Cajun Clickers club. Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bonnie Jean Ozley Hammons, children Jayne Hammons Smith, husband David Smith, of San Antonio, TX and Donna Kaye Hammons. Grandchildren Sarah Elizabeth Smith and Grant Donovan Smith of San Antonio, TX. Numerous nieces and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; Aubrey Hammons, Otis Hammons and Roy Hammons; two sisters, Earline Wade and Olive Weathersby. Visitation will be Saturday, May 5th at Resthaven Gardens of Memory from 9:00 until service and internment at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's Carpenter Hospice House. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Our Lady of the Lake NeuroICU and St. Joseph's Carpenter house for excellent care given to Don and his family.
