Dolores Upton

Jackie Upton was born on July 4, 1929 in Seminole, Oklahoma and died January 2, 2021 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was her wish that she be cremated there be no embalming or public viewing. She was a loving daughter, wife, and mother and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Jackie met her husband, Richard "Dick" Upton, in high school in Mattoon, IL, where they were married in 1949. They had a wonderful, loving life together. They had three children, Mark, Jeff and Diane (deceased). After Dick's graduation from the University of Illinois as a geologist and through their 64 years of marriage, they lived the life of oil people and moved all over the Rocky Mountains,.Oklahoma , Texas and Louisiana making friends wherever they went. Jackie took up her college education after her children were in school , graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Colorado, and received a Master's degree in special education from the University of New Orleans. She loved teaching, and throughout her career she had an indelible impact on the many children who were fortunate to be her students.

While living in Louisiana she and Dick began to sail and many of the best times of their lives were spent cruising Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico with family and friends. Their last long cruise was from Louisiana to the Chesapeake Bay area and back. She played golf, in her words, "enthusiastica lly, but not well." After Dick's retirement, they returned to Louisiana, the state they had learned to love, and the place where their sons had settled with their families.

She missed teaching, and spent many years volunteering with the EBR Parish public school system.

Her parents were O.D. Harper and Vera Maude Reeder. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Mark Upton and Martha Beck Upton, Jeff Upton and Lisa Wilkins Upton; her grandchildren, Michelle, Jacqueline, Rachael, Emily, Sara, and Anna Claire; her sister, Cookie Olson and children Erin, Mark, and Michael; and great-:grandchildren Landon, Ella Rae, Grace, Ian, and Julian. A private memorial service will be held later.
