Dennis E. Carlton -- Denny to those who loved him – passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, July 30, at age 79. Denny was born on November 22, 1943, oldest child to the late Walter M. Carlton, Jr., and Geraldine Williams Carlton. Denny graduated from Istrouma High School and had a long and successful career in commercial real estate. However, he was most proud of the family he raised with his wife of 47 years, Connie Carlton. Additionally, Denny is survived by his children Kelli Eubanks, Christopher Carlton (and wife Cater), Kathleen Fitzpatrick (and partner Rick), Jamie McCullough (and husband Jerry), and Denise James (and husband Chris); ten grandchildren: Lindsay Corona (and husband Josh), Morgan Womboldt (and husband Josh), Mason McCullough (and fiancée Callie), Arden Goellnicht (and husband Ricardo), Mitchell McCullough, Emily Hotard, Cater Carlton, Holland Carlton, Grayson James, and Bethany James; and four great-grandchildren: Margot McCullough, Luke Womboldt, Millie McCullough, and Logan Womboldt – and he was eagerly looking forward to meeting one more later this year. Denny is also survived by his brother, Walter M. “Jackie” Carlton, III, his sister-in-law, Linda Carlton, and his sister, Lynn Kollars.
Denny was the epitome of the Louisiana man. He loved LSU sports and never missed an LSU football game. He made the most of life in the Sportsman’s Paradise; he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and all-around outdoorsman, and he loved spending time outdoors with his friends and family members. For many years, he and his friends had a duck camp in south Louisiana where they hunted just about every weekend during the season. Denny loved being on the water, especially on his 43-foot cruiser known as Dreamcatcher. Denny and Connie loved entertaining family and friends on Dreamcatcher and exploring the rivers and lakes of Louisiana. In recent years they traveled extensively, both in the United States and abroad. Denny loved nothing more than visiting his children and grandchildren and only rarely and regretfully missed a graduation or other major event.
Denny was a highly respected member of the real estate community in Baton Rouge. He began his career at an early age, first in residential and later brokering commercial real estate. If you were in commercial real estate in Louisiana, chances are that at some point you did a deal with Denny. He spent most of his career representing Walmart’s real estate division around the country. His reputation in the commercial real estate world was impeccable, and he was honored with an invitation to Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, where he was recognized as one of the company’s top broker partners.
However, his true legacy is that of a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. His laugh was infectious, and he always had a good story to tell -- even if we did tease him about telling the same ones over and over again. He never forgot a birthday, and all his children and grandchildren will miss the annual phone call that always started with his baritone voice singing “Happy Birthday.”
Visitation will be held Monday, August 14, 2023, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, with a service to follow. Pallbearers will be grandsons Mason McCullough and Mitchell McCullough, sons-in-law Jerry McCullough and Chris James, and nephews Scott Carlton and Brady Carlton.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Denny’s name to one of his favorite charities: St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
