Dr. David Paul Norwood, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the age of 63. He was born in Würzburg, Germany to Don and Teréz Norwood on February 3, 1961.
As a child, David moved from place to place with his military family before finally settling in Beaumont, Texas. There, he attended French High School and Lamar University. He started his PhD at University of North Texas and finished at University of Iowa. David was dedicated to his family, friends and to his job as a Physics Professor at Southeastern Louisiana University. He would go above and beyond his duties to help his students. David enjoyed traveling, hiking, sailing, and taking pictures of sunsets. Besides several scientific organizations, he was a proud member of the ACLU and Sierra Club. David was also charitable and donated to many charities and organizations including Covenant House in New Orleans, Oxfam, Partners in Health, Planned Parenthood, Wikipedia, WRKF and PBS.
David will be remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and students as a generous, kind, smart, and funny man, and he will be forever missed.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Andór and Magdalena Gangl and Wilburn Cullen “Pete” and Louise Norwood, and his brother, André Michael Norwood.
David is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dr. Elena Cucurull; his parents, Don and Teréz Norwood; his daughter, Andrea Norwood; and his sister, Kyung Sook Norwood. Also left to cherish his memory are his in-laws, Maria Teresa Canosa, Joe Godeaux, Josep Cucurull, Mati Rubio, Teresa Cucurull, Josep Maria Silva, Jordi Cucurull and Ester Gracia; his nieces and nephews, Roger, Marta, Judit and Jaume; as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins, and other family members and friends in the United States, Spain, Germany and elsewhere around the world.
The family would like to give special thanks to all of the doctors, nurses, and personnel at the ICU at Baton Rouge General who took care of David and to Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA) for making sure that David’s giving nature lives on after him.
Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy. in Baton Rouge, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. until Memorial Services at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of the charities listed above in David’s honor.
