A retired pipe fitter and member of Plumbers Steamfitters Local Union 198, he died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at his home. He was 84, a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Charlotte, N.C. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having advanced rapidly to the rank of first sergeant. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Denham Springs. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Virginia Ginger Jones and husband John M. Mike Jones and Ruth Evelyn Lulie Cosby and husband Nelson Wayne Cosby; son, David Andrew Andy Long Jr. and wife Melinda Mitchell; four grandchildren, Russ Jones, Todd Cosby, Preston Long and Blake Long; three great-grandchildren, Triston Cosby, Landon Cosby and Ava Cosby; numerous nieces and nephews; and his very loyal best friend, Wanzie Chaney. Preceded in death by his very loving and dedicated wife of 57 years, Ruth Myra Descant, who was of Cottonport; parents, Charles and Mary McAulay Long; two granddaughters, Christin Cosby and Beth Jones; three brothers, Albert, Ray and Max Long; and sister, Evelyn Jones Holbrook. He loved to dance and fish.
