David Clarke Hanner, Sr., age 78, passed from this world on Friday, February 28, 2025.
David was born on September 4, 1946, to Marian and Rickford Hanner in Charlotte, North Carolina. He graduated from Myers Park High School and East Carolina University. Upon graduation, David enlisted in the United States Army in 1964, where he served one year in Heidelberg, Germany and completed a ten-month tour in Vietnam. Most of his life was spent in Greensboro, North Carolina as a very active member of the community. When he wasn’t working as an insurance agent or running with friends in Battleground Park, Dave was president of the Lion’s Club, a member of Rotary, and President of the Greensboro Ski Club throughout his 45 years of living in Greensboro. David loved his friends and loved to run marathons, ski, and golf. In retirement, he could be found at the gym with friends, walking through Jaycee Park, golfing, or playing poker. He enjoyed his “Old Geezer Club” breakfasts at Biscuitville and dining at K & W Cafeteria with running friends. Mostly, he loved his children and grandchildren, to whom he offered his best puns.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim Hanner.
David is survived by his daughter, Katie Schellack of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and his son, David Hanner, Jr. of Knightdale, North Carolina; his grandchildren Mark and Avalynn Hanner, and Grace, Agatha, and Elinoah Schellack.
