David James Gilin, age 84, a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, peacefully entered a new eternal life in God's Kingdom, leaving behind his loved ones, on Easter Sunday, April 1st, 2018.
David graduated from the University of Detroit with a Bachelor of Engineering. He retired from BASF where he worked most of his career at both the Michigan and Louisiana locations. David first married Carol Ann Daily in 1958, and during their marriage four beautiful children were born. Later in life, David married Ann Harding Mahoney with whom he shared many happy years prior to her passing. David was an active member in the St. Thomas More Single Seniors group and had been involved in programs through the church for many years. David also enjoyed gatherings for card playing over the years. He was an accomplished pianist and found pleasure entertaining audiences during social events and holidays. David will be remembered for the extensive and wonderful Christmas decorations he would display inside and outside his home during the holiday season. His lights were featured on the news several times over the years and Christmas light viewing at "Mr. Gilin's" house had become an annual tradition for many.
David is survived by his 4 children, Catherine Rogers (Mark), Linda Butler, Steve Gilin (Helen) and Alena McDuff (Mark); his 7 stepchildren, T. J. Mahoney (Lisa), Liz Ganey (Tim), Jim Mahoney (Gail), Peter Mahoney (Mimi), Mary Kate Saunders (Kirk), Philip Mahoney (Carol Anne), and Meg Mahoney (Jason Wendt), and their families; his brothers Gene Gilin (Milly) and Michael Gilin (Colleen); 13 grandchildren; Ronald Rogers (Hallie), Bonnye Rogers, Sean Rogers (Lauren), Faith Rogers, Chris Rogers, Grace Rogers, Dennis Butler, Jr. (Catherine), Jennifer Repp, Luke Gilin, Jeremy Gilin, Shannon McDuff, Kathryn McDuff, Kelly McDuff; 5 greatgrandchildren, Julian Rogers, Benjamin Rogers, Abigail Butler, Madison Rogers and Cecelia Rogers; and special friend, Rose Sheppard.
He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Gilin, mother, Eunice Gilin, sister, Gretchen Gilin, brother, Wallace Gilin, greatgrandson, Nicholas Rogers, first wife, Carol Ann Daily and second wife, Ann Mahoney Gilin.
Visitation will take place at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on April 7th, beginning at 10 o'clock with mass at 11 o'clock. Burial will follow at Resthaven on Jefferson Highway. Pallbearers will be his grandsons; Ronnie, Sean and Chris Rogers, Denny Butler, Luke and Jeremy Gilin.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society (cancer.org), the Cancer Research Institute (cancerresearch.org) or to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
