David Garrett

The world lost a good guy on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, when David Garrett passed away peacefully in his sleep at St. James Place. A resident of Baton Rouge, David was born on July 8, 1931, and grew up in Jonesboro, La. He deeply loved and shared lots of laughter and many great times with his wife of 58 years, Louise Mestayer Garrett, and was passionately committed to his four children dayin and dayout for the last 52 years of his very full and meaningful life. His smile was big and broad like his shoulders, offering anyone in his presence the dual sensation of joy and comfort. He was his brothers keeper and preferred to give to others rather than to receive, except when it came to joketelling. His compassion for his family and his many friends and coworkers had no limits. He was very spiritual. And he loved his country, which he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Forces Office of Special Investigations. In addition to his AllAmerican good looks and superb culinary talents, David was a very smart man. He earned accounting and law degrees from LSU in 1951 and 1958, respectively. In 1959, he became just the second person in Louisiana to hold a law license in conjunction with a CPA certificate. And later, he attended the Harvard Graduate School of Business. David loved to work and his career spanned 52 years. He served as General Counsel and CFO for Piccadilly Cafeterias, Inc., from 196479. He was the founder and CEO of Carousel Cafeterias, Inc., in Monroe, from 197990. He then returned to Baton Rouge to practice law and accounting, and was a partner in the Garrett and Garrett Insurance Agency, and a member of the board of directors of ITI Technical College, until 2010. From the time he was a little boy, David bled purpleandgold. LSU sports was an integral part of his life and he even traveled to Omaha on three occasions to witness LSU baseball championships at the College World Series. He was an exceptional athlete in high school, and, over the years, loved watching his children and grandchildren compete in all sports. In college, David was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and took great pride in the fact that his two sons, and two of his grandsons, followed in his footsteps. David was a deep thinker and was larger than life. He was oneofakind. He made his mark in the world and on his family and friends. He will continue to be loved and sorely missed by everyone who called him friend. David is survived by his four children, Chris Garrett and Cissy Landry, both of Baton Rouge, Kevin Garrett and his wife Jannean of Edmond, Okla., and Ginger Quinn and her husband Brian of Little Rock, Ark. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, who affectionately called him Granddaddy, Beau, Libby and Jenny Landry and MacKayla Catron, all of Baton Rouge, Holly Bourgeois and her husband Lee of Rochester, Mich., Gabe Garrett and his wife Diana of Shreveport, Robin Selman and Andrew Garrett, both of Edmond, as well as Caitlin Quinn of Washington, DC, and Garrett and Virginia Quinn, both of Little Rock and three greatgrandchildren, Abigail Selman of Edmond, and Ava and Camille Bourgeois, both of Rochester. David is also survived by three siblings, June Williams of Baton Rouge, Dr. John Garrett of Bastrop, and Mike Garrett of Jonesboro. He was predeceased by his wife Louise, parents, A.R. and Nita Garrett, and his grandson, David Neal Garrett. The family would like to extend special thanks to his kind and faithful caregivers, Jo, Barbara, Mary, Kim, and Kathleen, and to St. Joseph Hospice. Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Friday, Feb. 25, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jeremiah Riley Scholarship Fund, 13944 Airline Hwy., Baton Rouge, La., 70817.
