David Castillo

December 14, 1956 — October 13, 2018

Baton Rouge

Our beloved son, brother, father, and coach, David Alexander Castillo, passed from this life into eternity on Saturday, October 13, 2018. He was 61.

David developed a love for sports at a young age playing CYO baseball, basketball, and Legion hardball, with his parents and sister cheering him on.  He played on various teams including the Episcopal High School boys’ basketball team. David was selected as a Basketball All-Star in 1974.

David spent over 40 years of his life impacting the lives of athletes and students across the state in his time as a high school coach and educator. His tenure included assisting in football at Woodlawn High School; basketball at Episcopal High School, University High School, and Rapides High School; and baseball at Barbe High School, Bethany Christian School, and Family Christian Academy. His head coaching tenure included Boys’ Basketball at Barbe High School, Bethany Christian School, Assembly Christian School, and Family Christian Academy. David was also the head girls’ basketball coach at Bethany Christian School and the Head Baseball coach at Assembly Christian School and Family Christian Academy. While at Barbe, his teams in 1992-93 and ’93 -‘94 were back-to-back quarterfinalists in Class 5A. The 1994 team lost to the eventual state-champions, Byrd High School, in a tightly contested game. David remains Barbe High School’s all-time leader in wins as head coach of the boys’ basketball program. In 2004, his Boys’ Basketball team at Bethany Christian School advanced to the Class B State Finals while his girls’ team advanced to the quarterfinals the same season. His last coaching position included girls’ and boys’ basketball at Family Christian Academy.

David is survived by his two children, Ali C. Landry and Grant Castillo, whom he shared with former spouse, Pamela F. Kyzar; his son-in-law Brad Landry; his parents Ted and Bunny Castillo; his uncle Godfrey Grant; his sister M’Lou C. Arcuri; his nephew Andrew Arcuri; and his niece Marie-Louise Arcuri. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, A.J. and Delores Bullock; his maternal grandparents, Marie-Louise and Herbert Grant; his uncle Everett Grant; his aunt Dolores and uncle Travis Owen; and his cousin, Sandy Hollier Langston.
