For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16. Culver L. Fischer, a resident of Baton Rouge, went to his heavenly home at age 86. He died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law and uncle. He was born in Iota on March 21, 1922. He graduated from Iota High School in 1940 and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was captured by the Japanese on Jan. 1, 1942, and was a prisoner of war for the duration of World War II. He retired after 20 years of devoted service to our country. He is survived by his wife of 4612 years, Velma Day Fischer; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Fischer Sigrest and Billy Wade Sigrest; grandson, Brian Wade Sigrest; and granddaughter, Autumn Elizabeth Sigrest. The Sigrest family are missionaries in Cebu, Philippines. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a loving son, Thomas Daniel Fischer; parents, Daniel and Lucy Fischer; and five brothers and three sisters. He was a charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church and faithfully taught the adult men's Sunday school class for 30 years. He retired in 1986 from the Department of Legislative Auditors. Visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Wednesday, June 4, from 10 a.m. until service in the chapel at 1:30 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Richard. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Pallbearers will be Victor Calvaruso, Bobby Caston, Archie Scooter Day Jr., Jerry Fischer, Chris LeBourgeous and Paul J. Miceli Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Herschel Dean, Dr. Foster Sanders, Dr. N. Joseph Deumite, Dr. Ricardo Rodriguez and Fred Wayne Rogers. The family wishes to express their gratitude and heartfelt thanks for the loving care that was given by his attending physicians and the staff of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
