Conway "Connie" Dione Flood Odom
Conway "Connie" Dione Flood Odom passed away peacefully at her home in St. Francisville, Louisiana on Tuesday, August 4, 2015; she was 85 years old. A cancer survivor of over 20 years, Connie was born on January 20, 1930 in Miles, Texas, and her family later moved to the community of Clegg in Live Oak County, Texas. After graduating from high school in George West, Texas, Connie went to Business College in San Antonio where she received a secretarial certification.
Connie married Charles Winston Odom of Three Rivers, Texas on May 1, 1948 where they lived until her husband joined the Air Force during the Korean War. While Winston was a radar instructor in the Air Force, Connie never spent an idle moment and worked at several jobs while the couple was stationed in Denver, Colorado; Spokane, Washington; and Flagstaff, Arizona. After the war ended, they moved to Brownsville, Texas where she worked for the US Customs and Border Patrol. In 1957 the couple moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where Winston got a job at the new Ormet Aluminum Plant. Soon after their move, son, Kevin was born and four years later a son, Jeffrey. Connie was a homemaker for many years, but when her children were older she worked part-time at Pughes Florist, and later worked for several years as an administrative assistant at Parkview Baptist Church.
After her husband passed away in 1985, Connie continued her education and earned a certification as a paralegal and Civil Law Notary for Louisiana. She then worked at Louisiana's State Capitol for the Louisiana Legislative Services for several more years. Having moved to St. Francisville, she pursued many hobbies after retiring, including being a Master Gardener (with a much-admired home flower garden) and Election Poll Commissioner; she used her creativity with the Quilting Guild and socialized with the Spanish Language Club. A member of First Baptist Church in St. Francisville, she was active in several ministries. Connie greatly enjoyed crocheting and sewing for friends and her grandchildren, and also loved to travel. Besides numerous stateside destinations, she toured Europe, the Soviet Union, Mexico, Costa Rica, returned to Russia after the "Wall" fell, and even took a cruise to Alaska and Canada.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, O.Z. Flood and Cleo Belle Tidwell Flood, and her husband, Charles Winston Odom. She is survived by sons, Kevin Alan Odom and wife, Donna (Black); Jeffrey Len Odom and wife, Charlotte (Avrill), all of St. Francisville; brothers, Joe (Maria) Flood of Lake Mary, FL and Phil Flood of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Taylor Ray Odom (Christina Luke) of Charlottesville, VA, Travis Winston Odom of Clearfield, UT, Kayla June Odom of Baton Rouge; Justin Charles Odom and Meghan Ashley Odom, both of St. Francisville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
