Coach Yates

September 12, 1945 — March 12, 2014

Coach Don Yates, 68 years young, stepped out of illness and pain into Eternal Life in Heaven on March 12, 2014. He was born September 12, 1945, in Dallas, Texas, and lived in the Buckner Baptist Childrens Home from the age of seven until he turned 17. Don proudly served his country in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, was a member of the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign War. He was one of the founding members of the LSU Baseball Team Coaches Committee, and an avid LSU fan. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Karen Kelly Yates daughters, Kelly Yates of Baton Rouge and Amy Yates Sutton and husband Scott of Shreveport son, Brad Yates and wife Carrie of Dallas, Texas grandchildren, Dameon Yates, Emma Yates, Tommy Insley, Brooke Sutton and Bryce Sutton brothers Jack and wife Tina of Murfreesboro, AR., Michael Arp and wife Rose of Reno, Nevada, Tim Arp of Dallas, Texas sister, Billie Rodgers of Athens, Texas brotherinlaw, Tommy Kelly of Minden, LA. mothersinlaw, Nedra T. Kelly of Minden, LA., and Rachel Lopez of Port Allen, LA. numerous nieces and nephews and his daily caregivers, Freya Swann and Jackie Garrett. He was preceded in death by his father, J.W. Yates mother, Betty White Arp and sister, Anita Yates. Honorary MVPs are the Hays Builders Championship Ball Team. Many thanks to the staff at Baton Rouge General ICU for their care and support. We would also like to thank all of Dons doctors for the excellent care and for the staff and nurses at Superior Home Care. A Celebration of Life will be held at Jefferson United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 12:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Michi Head.
