A retired United Methodist minister and resident of Baton Rouge, formerly of Bossier City, he died at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Butterfly Wing of Hospice of Baton Rouge. The Rev. Clyde W. Averett was 81, born Dec. 24, 1928, in West Monroe. He joined the Navy during World War II at age 16 and completed his high school requirements while in the service. He was also a veteran of the Army Reserve. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Clyde continued his education at Louisiana College where he earned his bachelors degree. While driving a bus of fellow students to class every morning, they were inspired to pray for their safe arrival. It was then that Clyde felt his call to the ministry. Clyde completed his education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received his Th.D. Clyde became an ordained minister in 1951 and served many congregations throughout Louisiana until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed fishing, golf, traveling to and spending time with longtime friends Mary and Ray in Colorado. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home on Saturday, March 13, from 1 p.m. until religious service at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dewitt M. Ginn. He is survived by his wife, Freida Tait Averett, whom he married on Dec. 29, 1954 two daughters, Susan Laube and husband Brent, and Sarah Picou and husband Doug a sister, Hazel Douglas and husband Bill six grandchildren, Aimee Berniard and husband Matthew, Carley and Samantha Picou, and Caroline, Matt and Ryan Laube a niece, two nephews and his beloved little dog, Molly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde C. Averett and Ella Worley Averett McCain. Many thanks to the caregivers at the Haven, Dr. Gahan and Dr. Clausen, Baton Rouge Hospice and the staff of Butterfly Wing for the compassionate care they provided to both Clyde and Freida.
