Charles David Mathews, 83, passed away peacefully on March 2 at The Woodleigh of Baton Rouge in Louisiana.
Charles was born on January 24, 1939 to Eugene and Katherine (Godwin) Mathews in Chestnut, LA, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his children Eugene Mathews; Angela (Juan Pablo) Garcia-Salas; his brother Jim (Glenda) Mathews, ten nephews and eleven nieces. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara (Hank) Millard and former wife Shirley Keen.
Charles graduated from Fair Park High School, Shreveport, Louisiana, Class of 1957. He studied forestry for one year at Louisiana Tech University. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1963 where he received a Good Conduct Metal and an Air Force Longevity Service Award. He went on to graduate with a degree in Accounting from Louisiana Tech University in 1974. He worked as a CPA for forty years and retired as Senior Auditor Manager in 2014.
Charles was an active member of the Kiwanis Club for over twenty years. He was also an active member of the American Legion, where he shared several letters reflecting upon his military service.
Charles loved playing his guitar, fishing, metal detecting, nature walks, reading and biblical study. Most of all, he loved people. He was known by family and friends as someone who always had a smile. He was described by his children as a father whose sacrifices and love, knew no bounds. His life was a reflection of grace, humility and the love of God. He loved people greatly and he was greatly loved.
