Burt McCormick Payne passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 14th, at the age of 94, with loving family beside him.
He was born in Dallas, TX and moved to Louisiana with his family in 1937. Burt was a great athlete and a star player on the Istrouma High School football team.
He attended LSU on a football scholarship and was a participant in the 1944 Orange Bowl. He enlisted and completed 22 months of training in the Army Air Force before returning to LSU in 1946. He graduated in 1948 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and worked in that field for 46 years. Burt saw his future wife while waiting on a LSU bus at the corner of 3rd Street and North Blvd. He found out she was Margie Tarver, courted her, and they were married in January of 1949 to spend the next 49 ½ years together. He was a loving husband and father and provider for his family. A very important part of Burt’s life was his dedication to and faith in the Lord. He was baptized at age 12 and was a member of the Church of Christ for the remainder of his years. He was a Bible School teacher, Deacon, and then Elder of the church and studied the Bible continually writing articles and several booklets to encourage others to follow Christ. He enjoyed fishing and golf and watching LSU sports. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Burt is survived by his daughter, Peggy Moragne; his sisters, Darlene Lewis (Clyde), Suzanne Organ (Glenn), Dinah Beene (Ron); daughter-in-law, Sara Nell; grandchildren, Amanda Carver (Mat), Thomas Payne (Lisa), Jared Payne; great-granddaughter, Coralia Carver; and numerous nephews and nieces.
