Bill N. Courtney, a resident of Baton Rouge, went to be with his Heavenly Father on June 20th, 2018 surrounded by his family.
Bill was born on September 29, 1926 in Nowata, Oklahoma. He moved to Baton Rouge as a teenager and graduated from Istrouma High School. He went on to serve in the Merchant Marines and then worked for Esso (Standard Oil/Exxon) for 18 years as a pipefitter. After leaving the plant, he formed Circle Insurance Agency, A & B Equipment company and later Courtney Enterprises. He was a true entrepreneur investing in real estate, building houses and developing Courtney's Mobile Home Village and Courtney's RV Park. Bill's true passion was serving God & sharing his love of Jesus. He was a Sunday School teacher for over 70 years and had served as Sunday School Superintendent at Bethel Church Assembly of God where he was a longtime member. He originally helped build Central Assembly of God & was Superintendent of Sunday School under the pastor-ship of his brother Rev. James Courtney. He then went on to help build First Assembly of God (now Hosanna) and served on the board, was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and Superintendent of Sunday School during the many years he attended there. Bill organized the Baton Rouge Prayer League, Headed Light for the Lost Ministries, and served as Head of the Men's Ministry for the Louisiana Assembly of God for seven years. He also had served as a Gideon, ministered to students at LSU through Chi Alpha, worked with the prison ministry at Angola State prison and went with Missions to various foreign countries building churches and spreading the gospel. Bill was a world traveler as a Merchant Marine, a private citizen and through his mission travels. He especially enjoyed his two trips to Israel, the Holy Land.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Frankie Courtney, along with his children from his 1st marriage his sons, Gerald Courtney, Kelvin Courtney (Debra), and Billy Courtney (Nancy); daughter, Judy Courtney; Step sons, Frank Prisk (Kathy) and Jeff Prisk (Melissa); Step daughter, Connie Johnson (Jimmy); sisters, Ilene Hurley (Everett) and Joann Grimmer (Tim). 7 grandchildren, Vanessa Ladnier, Jonathan Courtney (Lydia), Jordan Courtney (Kharis), Christine Courtney, Janalyn Newchurch (David), Landon Courtney (Courtney) and Daniel Courtney (Kaitlyn). 16 adoring great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Virgil & Essie "Pete" Courtney; his first wife, Melda Hoover Courtney; his brothers, James and John Courtney; grandsons, Jeremy and Corey Courtney; great granddaughter, Ariana Courtney.
Visiting hours will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home Monday, June 25th from 5pm-8pm. Visitations will resume on Tuesday, June 26th from 9am until Memorial Service at 11am. Leading the Memorial Service will be his longtime friend, Rev. Don Logan and his pastor, Rev. Joseph Vosberg.
