On Monday, March 28, 2022, Betty Jean (Eddy) Falcon, devoted mother of four children, passed away at the age of 84 in her Baton Rouge home of 50 years, while surrounded by loving family members. Betty had experienced a series of debilitating setbacks over the past 13 months, but her indomitable spirit carried her through until the Lord finally called her home.
Betty was born in Angola, LA on November 16, 1937, to a depression-era working-class family. Her WWI‑veteran father Damien P. Falcon Sr. was a rail car inspector for the L&A Railway, while her mother Marguerite Webre Falcon, raised their six children in a provided railroad boxcar. Damien was eventually transferred to the L&A Railway rail yard in north Baton Rouge, and the family purchased a home just a few blocks away in the Standard Heights neighborhood. Shortly thereafter the family added a baby girl, completing a family of seven children.
While Betty’s three oldest brothers were off serving in WWII, Betty and the other three siblings experienced a typical north Baton Rouge working-class upbringing. They worshipped at nearby St. Anthony Catholic Church, attended public schools, and occasionally made trips downtown for shopping and entertainment.
Betty graduated from Istrouma High School in 1956, and just 18 months later she eloped with fellow Istrouma graduate Charles Eddy III in Woodville, MS. The young couple rented a home just a few blocks from Betty’s parents and began their own family two years later with the birth of their daughter Angela. Betty and Charles subsequently had three sons: Charles Eddy IV in 1961, John in 1963, and Steven in 1965. The Eddy’s moved into their first family-owned home near Istrouma High School a few years later, and in 1972 moved to their final married residence in a middle-class Broadmoor neighborhood.
To provide her children with the best possible opportunities, Betty supplemented the family income by apprenticing with her mother as a seamstress, and together they ran a small-scale bespoke women’s clothing business out of her mother’s home, creating wedding gowns, prom gowns, cheerleader uniforms, and other fine clothing for an appreciative clientele. Despite carrying such a demanding workload, Betty also worked as a delivery/pickup driver for Key Color photo processing labs.
A devout Catholic, Betty’s hard work enabled her to send the children to parochial schools. All four children attended St Anthony Elementary, and Angela and John attended Redemptorist High, while Charles and Steven attended Catholic High. John and Steven finished their high school education at Broadmoor High.
Betty also immersed herself in activities devoted to her progeny. She served as a girl scout leader and religion teacher and supported her children’s sporting and band activities. She was especially gifted at crafting clothing and accessories for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her hidden sentimentalism was recently discovered in a large decades-old cache of her children’s grade school arts and crafts projects, report cards, and other memorabilia.
Visiting hours for Betty will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home on Friday, April 1, from 12:30pm until services at 2:30pm. Burial will follow at the Resthaven Gardens of Memory. She is preceded in death by her former husband Charles, and siblings Damien P. Falcon, Jr, Harold J. Falcon, Raymond A. Falcon, Charles B. Falcon, Peggy J. Wolsefer, and Sadie F. Anderson. Betty is survived by her four children, daughters-in-law Mary Amanda Krieger Eddy and Debbie Lowry Eddy, grandchildren Ashley Eddy Gibbons, Bryan Eddy, and Samantha Eddy Madison by Charles and his former spouse Lisa McCubbin Skea, grandchildren Christopher and Matthew Eddy by John and Debbie, and great grandchildren Caspiana, Carson, Lydia, Evelyn, Jordyn, and Brooklyn Gibbons, and Julia, Henry, and Tucker Madison.
