Barbara Joan Coner, age 72, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on January 24, 2019. Joan attended Woodrow Wilson High School and Portsmouth General Hospital School of Nursing. Joan cared for her community as a nurse for many years and was recognized through many awards and accomplishments in the field of nursing. Later in her career, she traveled to hospitals across the country as a healthcare software trainer. After retiring, she became a caregiver. Her life was certainly filled by giving of herself and taking care of those around her. Joan was a member of Beta Sigma Phi since November of 1973. She held the Torchbearer degree, the highest degree attainable. She enjoyed reading mystery novels, painting, and collecting nutcracker figurines, affectionately earning her the nickname “Nutcracker Nana”.
Joan is survived by her three children, Mary (Allan) Salbador, Christopher (Stacie) Coner, David (Micaela) Coner; her sister Connie (James) Woodruff; and six granddaughters, Sarah, Lorna, Meagan, Alyssa, Helen, and Lillian. She is preceded in death by her father, Barnes Kittrell Williams, and her mother, Ina Love Williams Poffenbarger.
Visiting hours will take place at Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. until a memorial service at 11:00 a.m.
