Arthur Lamm, Jr.

June 18, 1928 — December 8, 2020

Arthur E Lamm Jr, died peacefully at his home on the morning of December 8, 2020.  Born in Magnolia, MS on June 18, 1928 to Lucy Reeves and Arthur Lamm Sr., he was raised in New Orleans and graduated from Warren Easton High School in 1948. He earned his BA in from Southeastern LA University in 1951 and Masters Plus 30 from LSU in 1968.

On July 7, 1951, Arthur married Gloria Peterson of New Orleans and the couple moved to Baton Rouge where they, with their 4 children, made a life together for 40 years.

Arthur spent his 30-year career as an educator in East Baton Rouge Parish working as a teacher, principal, and director of instruction. He loved his students and took a great pride in knowing everyone, parents and children, by name. After retirement from EBRPSS, he was instrumental in the founding of Parkview Baptist school where he served for 10 years as Superintendent.

In retirement, he remained committed to education and educators. He acted as President and Legislative Committee member for the Retired Teachers’ Association, Baton Rouge Chapter. While on the Legislative Committee, Arthur lobbied the state legislature tirelessly. With his influence, the Automatic Cost of Living Raise bill passed the state legislature. To this day, retired teachers benefit from the passage of this bill.

He retired as a Colonel from the US Army, LA National Guard and the Army Reserve with 36 years of service and served as the Garrison Commander of the 40XX in Baton Rouge.  Arthur valued his service immensely and hosted events educating youth on their responsibility to uphold the US Constitution and Bill of Rights as well as our Free Enterprise System. He was a true patriot. Arthur was a member of SLU Alumni Association, where he served as president.  He was a member of the SLU Golden Grads and the Past Football players Association that helped bring football back to SLU.

He was also a member of the MOAA (Retired Officers Association), Military Civic Association, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Baton Rouge Area Music Club. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church where he served on many committees, taught Sunday School, lead children church and sang in the choir. Mr. Lamm could often be heard before he was seen, spreading joy and happiness to others through his beautiful tenor.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Lucy Reeves Cotelle, father, Arthur Lamm Sr., brother James Edward Lamm, his first wife Gloria Peterson Lamm, and his second wife Bonnie Smith Lamm.

Arthur is survived by a large family, wife Laura Nell Lamm, children Cynthia Treece (Michael), Laurie Robertson, Arthur E Lamm III (Yoko), and Valerie Altazin (Keith), step-children Nora Abat and Bernadette FitzPatrick, J.R. Barry (Phyllis)10 grand-children and 15 Great-grand-children and 20 great children.

Honorary Pallbearers are Rickey, Jr., Jeffery and Lee Robertson, Michelle and Justin Treece, Joseph and Amii Lamm and Kelly, Ryan and Paul Altazi. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Parkview Baptist Church in Arthur’s name.
