A retired captain for the Baton Rouge Police Department, he died Friday, April 22, 2011, in Hammond. He was 75 and a resident and native of Independence. Mr. Martello served in the U.S. Army as an MP for four years and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Municipal Peace Officers Association, Louisiana Peace Officers Association, Honor Guard and U.S. Marine Corps Active Reserve. He was the district commander of the 3rd District of the Baton Rouge Police, director of the Baton Rouge Police Training Academy, senior instructor for the YWCO Women SelfDefense Training and counselor for the Lions Club Youth Camp. He was awarded Knights of Columbus Police Officer of the Year in 1976. He graduated from LSU Law Enforcement Institute and the FBI Academy. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Tuesday, April 26, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting resumes at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 27, from 9 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memories. Survived by his two daughters, Sherri Martello Alonzo and husband Gary W. Alonzo Jr., and Mary Michelle Martello two sons, Mark Anthony Martello and wife Carol Pierce Martello, and Jason Clark Martello four brothers, Michael Carlos Martello and wife Jorgiana, Paul Raymond Martello, Rockie Andrew Martello and Pete Russell Martello and two grandchildren, Blake Michael Wax and Logan Wayne Alonzo. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Agnes Clark Martello father, Michael C. Martello mother, Mary Santangelo Martello sister, Leona Martello and brother, Cosimo Joseph Ned Martello. Pallbearers will be Gary Alonzo, Blake Wax, Marion Martello, Michael D. Lee, Logan Alonzo and Cosimo Martello Jr.
