Ethel Ann Peeples Biggers was born on February 15, 1943, in Meridian, Mississippi. Her mortal life ended on May 27, 2018, and her Heavenly one began immediately.
Upon graduation from Mississippi College she taught English at Clinton (Mississippi) High School for one year before entering LSU graduate school in August 1966. She has been a resident of Baton Rouge since that time.
Survivors are her husband of almost fifty-three years, Aaron; son, Lewis (Cheryl) of Annapolis, MD; daughter, Sarah (Paul) Pittman of Baton Rouge; and six wonderful grandchildren, Andrew and Jack Biggers and Hannah, Jenna, Emma and Ella Pittman. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy (Ken) Swarts of Jackson, MS; brothers, Terry (Sharon) Peeples of Gulf Shores, AL, Vernon (Beverly) Peeples of Aiken, SC and Dr. Sam (Debbie) Peeples of Ridgeland, MS; and a host of nieces and nephews from Arizona to North Carolina. Preceding her in death were her parents, Lewis and Frances McCoy Peeples.
After guiding her children through elementary school, Ann completed her graduate degree and continued her career in East Baton Parish Schools as a teacher of English and Creative Writing at McKinley and Glasgow Middle Schools. She was twice named EBRPSS middle school teacher of the year. She was a member of the first group of teachers selected to be a part of the LSU Summer Writing Project and found great joy in writing and encouraging her students to find their literary voice. Her association with the LSU Summer Writing Project continued for a number of years as a Co-Director.
In retirement she was an active member of Baton Rouge Area Retired Teachers and was a past president of the group. She was a long time member of Alpha Delta Kappa and past president of her local unit. It was also a joy of hers to be a part of the One Book, One Community steering committee for several years. Before her health declined she and Aaron enjoyed being with friends and family, traveling, gardening, her book club, and teaching conversational English through Church of the Nations, a sub congregation of University Baptist Church, where she had been a member since coming to Baton Rouge. She was VIPS Reading Friend at Highland Elementary for eight years and thoroughly enjoyed each student with whom she shared time. At UBC she served as a teacher, member of Sanctuary and Senior Adult choirs, deacon, and active member of various committees. Many will miss her sweet smile and kind spirit.
Visitation will be at University Baptist Church, 5775 Highland Rd., Monday, June 4, from 12 to 2pm, followed by a service in celebration of her life.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to support the church or charity of their choice.
Her family is grateful to the many friends, former colleagues, and caregivers whose prayers, encouragement, and love has supported and sustained them throughout the past year.
