Amos Kent, Sr.

December 17, 1919 — December 4, 2017

Amos (A.J.) Kent, Sr., 97, a lifetime resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on December 4, 2017 at his home.

He attended North Highland Elementary, and graduated from Central High School, where he was a member of the 1930 Central State Champion basketball team and held the state record for shotput for 11 years. He attended LSU on a basketball scholarship.

He served in the 3505th Army Air Force stateside during World War II in Communications. He worked at Esso Refinery in Baton Rouge for 32 years, retiring as Utility Supervisor and was a member of Fleur de Lis Exxon Annuitants Club. He played guitar since the age of 12, and many other instruments, and sang for others from the age of 5 until his passing. He was a member of the Louisiana Lagniappe Dulcimer Society and the Bayou Square-A-Rounds square dance chapter 149, traveling extensively around the United States. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Minette Josephine Babin; his second wife of 7 years, Clara Whitehead; his youngest daughter, Debra Kent Eschete; his parents Allie L. Kent and Minerva Crawford; and his siblings Allean Kent Bankston and her husband Ray, Stanley Kent and his wife Rosalie Dyer, Esther Kent Phillips and her husband Bill, and Margaret Guy.

He is survived by his children Virginia (Ginger) Kent Fortson of Mandeville, La.; Linda Kent Doiga and spouse Aaron Doiga of Walker, La.; A.J. Kent, Jr. and spouse Pat Stringer Kent of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews that he considered as his children, too. He is also survived by many long-time friends, near and far, especially in the Mountain View and Hot Springs, Arkansas areas where he played music and did a lot of fishing.

Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy. Baton Rouge, LA on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Visitation will resume on Friday, December 8, 2017 from 9:00 AM until services at 10:00 AM. Burial will immediately follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to his neice, Janet Sagona, for always being there to help her "Unk" anyway and anytime; to Caroline Jones for her kind and compassionate assistance as his part-time caregiver; and all the compassionate help from team members of Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care who came to help us at his home.
