Alton "Ike" Hurst, passed away in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Alton was born in Shrewsbury, LA on June 10, 1950 to the union of Katherine (Watkins) and the late Lucius Jackson "L J" Hurst, Sr. Alton was a loving husband, son, father, brother, in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a devoted special friend. Alton graduated from John H. Martyn High School where he met and later married the love of his life, Beverly L. Johnson. The joining together of the two lasted for 47 wonderfully blessed years. Their divine union yielded three beautiful daughters who were the apple of his eye. Alton "Ike" Hurst began his secular career as a package car driver progressing to a regional supervisor for United Parcel Service. During the course of his career he became known to his coworkers as "Snak Pak" until his retirement after 34 years of loyal service.
In 1969 in Atlanta, Georgia, Alton's love for Jehovah motivated him to dedicate his life exclusively in baptism. Alton's desire to help others to acquire the love of Jehovah drew him closer to his Heavenly Father which allowed him to be faithful to the end.
Alton is survived by his wife Beverly, his children; Christine (Larry) Berry, Cortessa (Michael) Hunt, and Malencia (Byron) Winters; his seven grandchildren; Alora, Valencia, Victoria, Gabrielle, Bryce, Brayden, Brayla, and his only great grandson Michael Christopher a.k.a. "Gip".
Survived by his mother Katherine Hurst (Watkins), brothers Lucius Jr. (Wanda), Felton Sr. (Marilyn), Leon (Jean), Charles (Bernadette), and the late Cornelius (Sylvia); sisters Katherine Sanders, Mary (Tyrone) Morgan, Dianne (Lionel) Madere, Hazel (Lionel) Washington, Elaine (Lester) Harris; two brother-in-laws Percy (Alma) Johnson Jr., David Johnson, as well as two sister-in-laws Belinda (Joe) Frenchie, Brunetta Guter, and a host of nieces, nephews, co-workers, and a vast number of spiritual brothers and sisters. He also shared a bond with a special spiritual brother Rohn Easter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lucius Jackson "L.J." Hurst Sr., his brother Cornelius "Neil" Hurst Sr.; father and mother-in-law, Percy (Verna) Johnson Sr.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 29, 2016 from 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 2562 Toulon Drive. Memorial service will promptly begin at 1:00 pm.
