Alberta Fontenot Saunders passed away at her home in Baton Rouge on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born in Ville Platte, Louisiana on January 14, 1943. After securing a degree in elementary education from McNeese State University, she spent many years as a dedicated educator who touched the lives of countless children. She was known for her unconditional love for her family, her fighting spirit, her desire to speak her mind, her sense of humor, and her unwavering faith in God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Joseph Fontenot and Gazelle Marie Launey Fontenot; her husband, Hilliard Ellis Saunders, Jr.; her sisters, Fleta Fontenot and Roberta Fontenot; and her granddaughter, Caroline Ann Saunders.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Dr. J. Jacques Saunders (Deserae), Henri Saunders (Karen), and Danielle Saunders Mixon (William); as well as nine grandchildren, Lauren, Isabella, Simone, Greyson, Catherine, Hillary, Rachel, Eliza, and William.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m., with entombment at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
The family would like to offer special thanks and sincere appreciation to Catherine Fontenot Cazes for the care and companionship she provided Alberta during her final months.
