James A. Kern, Jr., 56, born in Paincourtville, LA, a native of Grand Bayou and resident of Clinton, LA, peacefully passed away and into the arms of our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, November 22, 2017. Jimmy was God’s cherished gift to his family, as a husband and best friend, father, grandfather, son, and brother. Jimmy held most dearly the love of his children and grandchildren. His greatest desire was to leave a legacy for his family to walk as men and women who love and follow Jesus all the days of their lives.

Jimmy was an employee of Performance Contractors, Inc. and over the years he enjoyed being a part of and contributing to the industry. Jimmy’s greatest passion was sharing the gift of salvation through Christ Jesus, and how this gift is available to everyone willing to receive it. He had a true servant’s heart which was clearly seen in his daily walk, always looking to help or bless someone in some way – whether it was stopping to change a stranger’s tire, lending a hand wherever he saw an opportunity, cooking someone’s favorite meal for them, or anonymously blessing others if he knew they needed help. Jimmy had a sincere, caring, and compassionate heart for everyone, believing he should not just “say” he loved or cared for people but to “show” them love and care in action. Jimmy lived an “I am Second” life, always putting others first ahead of himself. Jimmy had a way of adding joy to the day of those around him, sure to lighten up one’s day with his fun personality – he made life fun. Jimmy enjoyed woodworking with reclaimed lumber, and often blessed others with one of his creations.

Jimmy had a personal ministry where he encouraged and mentored others to be their “Brother’s Keeper”, believing that we should support and watch over each other, not only physically but spiritually, as he often referred to Proverbs 27:17 ~ “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” He believed in doing all things as unto The Lord, giving his best in everything he did, even in the smallest of things.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Kathy L. Kern, three children – Jamie K. Landry and husband, Nick, Christen D. Laudermill, and Matthew J. Kern; six grandchildren – Regan Scoby, Rylie Scoby, Drake Scoby, Michael Abadie, Jr., Hannah Landry and Owen Landry; three brothers – Lynn P. Kern, Earl P. Kern, Bruce J. Guillot; two sisters – Debra Rousseau and Kimberly Breaux. He is preceded in death by his parents, James A. “Buddy” Kern, Sr. and Rita G. Kern.

Visitation will be held on November 27, 2017 from 6 pm – 9 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home in Baton Rouge. Visitation will resume on November 28, 2017, from 9 am – 12 pm with service to follow at 12 pm, at Abundant Life Church in Denham Springs. Interment to follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.

Pall Bearers will be: Lynn P. Kern, Earl P. Kern, Bruce J. Guillot, Nick Landry, Tommy Rousseau, Adam Breaux, Chris Roy, and John Marks.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, that individuals would instead, personally bless someone in need, in memory of Jimmy, or send a memorial gift to Abundant Life Church Building Fund (Edgewood Drive, Denham Springs, LA).

Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God”
